Alternative hypothesis (H₁)
This says there is a relationship, difference, or effect worth detecting.
Research methods in psychology are a way to slow down, ask better questions, check your assumptions, and use evidence before you decide what is true.
Elementary my dear student: You are a careful detective in psychology. You notice something, ask a question, gather clues, and make sure your answer fits the clues.
“Why are people stressed?” is huge. “Does five minutes of breathing practice reduce self-rated stress before an exam?” is testable.
Good researchers write down what happened, when it happened, and how it was measured so someone else could follow the same trail.
Your prediction can be wrong and your study can still be useful. The goal is not to “win.” The goal is to learn what the evidence supports.
The scientific method is a repeatable thinking routine. Each step protects you from jumping to conclusions too quickly.
A strong research question tells the reader who or what you are studying, what you want to understand, and what relationship or experience you are examining.
A hypothesis gives your study a prediction to test. In statistics, the null and alternative hypotheses are competing explanations for what your data might show.

You are showing what you plan to study, why the study matters, how you will do it, and how you will protect the people involved.
The introduction gives the reader the problem, why it matters, and the exact question your study will address. It should move from the big topic to the specific study.
Elementary my dear student: Tell me what puzzle you noticed, why anyone should care about the puzzle, and the exact question you want to solve.
A literature review is not a stack of article summaries. You compare studies, look for patterns and disagreements, and explain what the group of studies teaches us.
Elementary my dear student: Before you build a new Lego tower, look at towers other people built. What worked? What fell down? What part has nobody tried yet?
Design explains the type of study. Participants explains who will provide the data. Procedure explains exactly what will happen, in what order.
Elementary my dear student: This is the recipe. If another careful person cannot read your directions and understand what you did, the recipe needs more detail.
Analysis explains how raw observations become an answer. Ethics explains how the study protects participants' dignity, privacy, choice, and safety.
Elementary my dear student: First decide how you will sort the clues. Then make sure getting those clues does not hurt, trick, or embarrass the people helping with the study.
The conclusion reminds the reader what the proposed study could contribute. It should connect the research question back to the practical or theoretical problem.
Elementary my dear student: Finish by saying, “Here is the question again, here is why answering it would help, and here is what we could understand better afterward.”
College-level research is less about memorizing vocabulary and more about asking the right follow-up questions when you read a claim.
Ask who produced the information and whether the source has expertise, evidence, and transparent methods.
Ask: “How do they know?”People notice evidence that matches what they already believe. Researchers design procedures to reduce that influence.
Ask: “What else could explain this?”Words like “success,” “stress,” and “motivation” are too vague until you explain exactly how they are measured.
Ask: “What counts as stress?”A graph can reveal clusters, outliers, and trends that are easy to miss in a long column of numbers.
Ask: “What does the shape show?”One study is one clue. Confidence grows when different high-quality studies point in a similar direction.
Ask: “Do others find this too?”If a result is reliable, other researchers should be able to use similar methods and observe a similar pattern.
Ask: “Can it happen again?”Paraphrasing still requires citation because the underlying idea came from another source.
Ask: “Whose idea is this?”Feedback is not an attack on the researcher. It is a way to find weak spots before they weaken the final conclusion.
Ask: “What am I missing?”
